Mattawa Area Youth Golf Association 2005
Report
Anyone passing by the Mattawa Golf and Ski Resort
on a Tuesday during July and August would probably
have noticed a number of young people wearing red
golf shirts and white visors on the course, at the
putting green or at the driving range. These enthusiastic
youngsters were members of MAYGA, the Mattawa and
Area youth Golf Association. In its fourth year,
this organization has provided a successful summer
program for children aged 6 to 16. For 8 weeks,
on Tuesdays, junior golfers have been bussed to
the golf course from two pick up spots in town,
given a healthy snack and instruction and practice
in the sport of golf. Glenn Cundari, CPGA professional
is the coach and he has been instrumental in the
development of skills and positive attitude towards
the game. Also on hand each Tuesday was a devoted
group of volunteers, mom and dads, grandparents
and friends who realize the value of involving children
in a healthy outdoor activity that can lead to a
lifetime of fun and personal growth. Without their
regular presence at the course, it would be difficult
to conduct the program. Thank you very much.
On a typical Tuesday, half the group would receive
instruction from Glenn on specific aspects of the
game, from stance to grip, to swing, to etiquette.
The other half of the group would be on the course,
putting what they have learned into practice. It
is great to see how drives and putts improve over
the duration of the summer. On the final day, each
golfer is put into a foursome and a 9 hole scramble
is played. A spaghetti lunch is served and each
child receives a prize for his/her efforts.
MAYGA is very appreciative of the many sponsors
who contribute to this organization. Each participant
pays $70, which includes instruction, course time,
transportation, snacks, a golf shirt or visor and
the fun day at the end of the program. Therefore,
sponsorship is a necessity to keep the program running.
During Voyageur Days, MAYGA organizes a golf tournament
at the Mattawa Golf and Ski Resort. Many individuals
and businesses sponsor holes and donate prizes for
this special day. Thanks to them for helping make
this tournament such a yearly success. The Longest
Day of Golf is also held as a Fund Raiser. Scotiabank
matches the amount of money raised at this event.
Junior golfers ask friends and neighbours to sponsor
this. Sponsors include Janveaux Forest Products,
Smile Information Services, Royal Canadian Legion
Branch 254, Mattawa Oldtimers Hockey, Algonquin
Nursing Home, Tembec, Mattawa Men’s Hockey,
Mattawa Lion’s Club, The Doctors of Mattawa,
Town of Mattawa, and Ontario Power Generation. Special
thanks go to the generosity and help of Mike and
Brenda Martel, owners of the golf course. Don Lemaire
also deserves a big thank you for the time and effort
he put into making the 2005 fundraising so successful.
The Board of Directors, consisting of Vala Monestime
Belter, Dillon McGee, Michel Boulanger, Lynn Lavalle
and Hazel Swindle hope to see all the juniors back
next golf season. New and exciting activities are
being planned along with new hardworking board members.
